A Legacy Rooted in Royalty and Ritual

Silver crafting in Bali dates back to the Majapahit era (14th century), when Javanese Hindu artisans migrated to Bali following political upheaval in Java. These artisans brought with them techniques of fine metalwork, which merged with local Balinese symbolism and ritual needs. Initially, silver was used for ceremonial tools, temple offerings, and royal adornments.

Over time, the village of Celuk, near Ubud, became the heart of silver artistry in Bali. Families passed down techniques through generations, each adding their own refinements. Celuk artisans were once commissioned exclusively for temple and royal family work.

From Sacred to Global: The Modern Shift

In the 20th century, silverwork in Bali shifted from ceremonial to commercial. As tourism grew, so did interest in Balinese jewellery. This gave rise to a new generation of silversmiths who began combining traditional techniques with modern designs—delicate filigree, granulation, and hand-hammered textures—making their way into shops from Seminyak to San Francisco.

Still, the core remains: handcrafted detail, spiritual inspiration, and community-based craftsmanship.
