The Art of Balinese Silver Jewellery: Exploring Traditional Styles
Bali is not only famous for its landscapes and spirituality—it’s also a world-renowned hub for handcrafted silver jewellery. Each piece is more than decoration; it carries centuries of tradition and technique shaped by family, ceremony, and creative identity. In this post, we dive into the five main Balinese styles you’ll encounter in silverwork—and perhaps even try your hand at during your jewellery class.

1. Filigree (Benang Emas Style)
One of the most intricate and recognisable forms, filigree work involves creating lace-like patterns using fine silver threads. Artisans coil, twist, and solder these threads into delicate symmetrical designs—often floral or nature-inspired.
Symbolism: Grace, femininity, balance
Where to find it: Celuk, and in ceremonial pieces and earrings
Fun fact: A single filigree pendant can take up to 3 days to complete
2. Granulation
Granulation is the process of applying tiny silver dots—called granules—to a piece in precise patterns. It gives jewellery a textured, high-detail finish and is often used alongside filigree for added depth.
Symbolism: Stars, fertility, rice grains (prosperity)
Technique: No glue—each granule is hand-soldered with a torch
3. Repoussé and Chasing (Embossed Silver)
This involves hammering silver from the back (repoussé) and refining the front (chasing) to create raised relief designs—typically of mythological creatures, deities, or sacred symbols.
Common motifs: Barong, Garuda, lotus, naga
Use: Bold pendants, cuff bracelets, and ceremonial pieces
4. Openwork (Cutout Design)
A more modern adaptation, this style features cleanly cut shapes—often geometric or tribal-inspired—leaving open spaces to give the piece a lighter, more contemporary feel.
Design cue: Often used in rings and statement earrings
Symbolism: Air, openness, spiritual flow
5. Mixed Metal / Stone Inlay
While not traditional in origin, Balinese artisans now incorporate gold highlights, turquoise, moonstone, and lava stone into silver settings, blending tradition with innovation.
Modern application: Appeals to international buyers
Your experience: You can choose to set a local gemstone during your class
